You know you should eat more citrus fruit every day, but if you are like most people you hardly have time to eat all day and just do not have time to look for fruit when you are hungry. Citrus fruit is an important part of a healthy, balanced diet. They also are important for staying healthy throughout the winter cold and flu season. Here are a few easy ways that you can get more citrus into your diet without changing your lifestyle:
Keep a citrus fruit with you - If you have a citrus fruit with you at the office, while you are commuting, at school, or while you are running around each day you will be less likely to stop and get an unhealthy snack when you are hungry. Citrus fruits can last for a relatively long time so start stashing them. Keep a few oranges in your desk, or pack a grapefruit in your commute bag. Keep a small bag of oranges in the car so when you or the kids are hungry there is a delicious, satisfying snack that you can all enjoy right there.
Drink juice - Fruit juice is not as good as eating the actual fruit, but fresh citrus fruit juices are the next best thing to eating a piece of fruit. Juice a few oranges or grapefruits in the morning and carry the juice with you in a reusable jug. Store a jug of fresh juice in the refrigerator at work and have juice instead of coffee or soda when the afternoon slump hits. Juice will give you a natural boost of energy because it is full of vitamins and minerals. You can also mix some fresh citrus fruit juice into smoothies and other drinks to get the fruit you need on the go.
Use fruit when cooking - Citrus fruits can be used in thousands of different dishes. Instead of using a commercial salad dressing make your own Blood Orange vinaigrette or throw some orange segments into your dinner salad. Make an orange or citrus sauce to go with chicken or other savory main dishes. Instead of having cookies for dessert have some ice cream with an orange or lemon sauce. Make some candied citrus fruit peels and keep them in your purse or bag or in a jar on your desk. There are dozens of ways to work more citrus fruit into your daily diet if you start getting creative.
